Hello, I'm a newbie to WebGUI, but I'm a software engineer and have done web design for many years. I'm trying to learn WebGUI so that I can use it to design a new web site. I've installed the product and I'm in Admin mode, but I see no options for allowing me to change the template that is used for the site. I think it installed some additional templates by default. How do I go about choosing and using one? --- (Edited on 3/29/2006 12:16 pm [GMT-0600] by byounie) --- |

Did you ever get an answer to your question on how to do this. I am in the exact same situation as you were or are and no one really has a straight forward way to let me know how to change the look at feel of the WebGui site, or how to add additional sites e.g. to have an internet and an Intranet running on the same box.
Let me know, --- (Edited on 11/ 1/2006 11:51 pm [GMT-0600] by lagscrew) --- |

You need to change the Style Template. Also, changing the CSS that is used by any given template can make major changes. Maybe if you listed some concrete examples of what you're trying to do it would be easier to help you?

For running more than one site with one source install it's best to use WRE. For manual installation add a (second) config file for your new site, create needed folders (uploads), add a new database, add a vhost to your webserver. For site sepecific settings follow the installation instructions. Klaus --- (Edited on 2-November-2006 11:06 [GMT+0100] by Klaus) --- |

Hi - I've been using WebGUI for almost a year and know at least 2 ways. Before I list them you might want to check the documentation. 1) On any asset that uses templates you can edit them and then on the display tab you'll see the template currently in use. There should be EDIT and MANAGE buttons next to it. NB Use manage to make a copy -> paste -> rename of any default template and only edit the new copy having the new name, so you can always go back. Now and then there are people posting on here asking how to revert to a default template because they've gone and changed it on their installation. Don't get yourself in that situation.
2) From the Admin console go to Assets -> Root -> Import Node -> Templates and you'll see them listed. This is equivalent to clicking MANAGE as mentioned above. Make a copy and make your changes there. Then go back to the site and component you want to have a new template for, edit, and switch to the new template as covered in (1) above. Personally I prefer method (1). Cheers, Peter --- (Edited on 3/29/2006 10:39 am [GMT-0800] by peterkoning) --- |

Wow! I thought Content Managers were supposed to make web site development easy. I want to change the basic layout of the web site. That is, replace all the WebGUI graphics with my own logos, etc. It's turning out to be a lot less intuitive than to just code it in HTML directly and not use a CM. I assume it is just that there's something I don't grok yet. I would love it if someone were to help me see the joys of this tool. I assumed that the core layout (side graphics, top and bottom graphics, etc.) are defined in the "Root > Import Node > Templates > Layout template. When I edited it, I found such assets as "Left Column" and such. When I edited them, it contained XML code that was not just plain HTML, such as: <tmpl_if showAdmin> I had thought that there would be many templates that you can just pick from and have it change the look of the site. That does not seem to be the case, though. --- (Edited on 3/29/2006 5:31 pm [GMT-0600] by byounie) --- |

This is not XML code, this is the code of the WebGUI template language, see the online help for details. Generally three kind of templates to control the layout of a page. What you called "core layout" is in WebGUI the "style template", by default "WebGUI 6" is used, here you define the graphics, header and footer and the position of navigation and content. The "page layout template" controls the basic layout of the content part, one of these templates is the "Left Column" template that you mentioned. With this template you control the position of the content elements within a page layout. The third kind of templates are for control of the different assets you use. For example the Article Template in Article Asset. To select or change a template, click on the Edit button for the Page Layout or Asset and go to the Display tab. Ah, okay. That helps a lot! Thank you. The template I want to change is WebGUI 6. There must be other choices that come with it, and I know there are others on the web. I need to know how to change that layout. I've been having a hard time finding out how to do that in the documentation. --- (Edited on 3/30/2006 6:08 am [GMT-0600] by byounie) --- |

Hang in there, it does get easier. I've trained over 300 individuals on WebGUI throughout the years and once it clicks they love all the functionality. Beleive it or not, its harder for developers to catch onto it than a business user...just something i've learned over the years. Don't give up hope, get the documentation it will help tremendously and make sure that you're at the next WebGUI conference, you'll be amazed at what you walk away with. --- (Edited on 4/25/2006 1:25 am [GMT-0500] by Tiffany) --- |

now that you guys see how much people want to change the default look of webgui, can you guys come up with an official way to do this. i have the same problem as the guy above. i have to change the way our intranet looks to match the one from our website, and i'm having trouble starting this, as i would like to play with it and not break it. I'm also new to this. |
