Strange spectre problem  (#11444)
Issue

I have a strange spectre problem in some sites (not in all sites in the same server).

Sometimes, I get this error in webgui.log:

2010/02/23 14:51:01 - ERROR - spectre.conf - POE::Kernel::_dispatch_event[1056] - CRON: Response for job magnews.conf-pbcron0000000000000004 had a communications error. <html>
<head><title>An Error Occurred</title></head>
<body>
<h1>An Error Occurred</h1>
<p>502 Proxy Error</p>
</body>
</html>

This problem reiterates after 1/2 weeks.

After this error, spectre seems to work, but all the emails in mailQueue are not processed (I can force "run" in scheduled tasks, but nothing happens). After restaring spectre, mail are correctly sent.

In the meanwhile, for those site, I have a Nagios monitor for the mailQueue table.

Do you use the WRE?

Yes, 0.9.3.
I also have this problem in a 7.5.40 deploy.

How often do you get this problem?  Would you be willing to install some debug code in spectre to help us diagnose what is going on?

I get this problem about after a week or two...but sometimes after a month.
It's less frequent in a 7.7 site than a 7.5 site.
Yes, I can install debug code in spectre.

Debug code attached.  Please install it and then let us know if the Nagios monitor trips.  We'll say that if there are no problems after 6 weeks, that it fixes the bug.

I've also installed this on some local servers for testing.

Sorry, but I can't see any difference from the original WebGUI::Operation::Cron to the attached one...am I mistaken?

Sorry, I uploaded the wrong one. Due to helpdesk limitations, I can't upload a file with the same name, so the new one is Cron2.pm

Please download it and replace Operation/Cron with Cron2.

Were you able to install and test the patch?  Have you had the problem reoccur?

Okay, it's now officially been six weeks.  Have you had any spectre problems with email being sent, on the servers with the patch?

Unfortunately the error reoccurs today. In WebGUI.log:

2010/05/06 13:06:01 - ERROR - spectre.conf - POE::Kernel::_dispatch_event[1056] - CRON: Response for job magnews.conf-pbcron0000000000000004 had a communications error. <html>

This didn't reopen the ticket, but I'll reopen in manually.

Due to the wremonitor, or other problems, it is still possible for that entry to be put into the webgui log file.  However, it's only a real problem if emails stop getting sent out.

Please check the contents of the mailQueue table and see if there are lots of old, pending emails.

Yes, I look at logs when nagios tell me that there was mail in table mailQueue one hour old.

Does the communications error message continue popping up in the logs?

Please watch the mail in the table, and see if it eventually gets processed.  If the queue is very full, it can take a while for it to get cleared out by spectre and WebGUI.

No, there was only an entry, and watching at spectre inside WebGUI admin console, all seems to work fine (i can see running workflow and scheduled workflow).

The spectre bug was fixed and closed out in another ticket.  However, that fix caused another bug to happen, so it was reverted, which brought the original bug back.

A better version of the bugfix has been committed for 7.10.2, and for 7.9.16.
