One of the more interesting things that came out of the last RFE day is template upgrade protection. A mistake that many novice WebGUI users make is to edit the default templates and then use those edited versions in their site. The problem is that WebGUI needs to be able to modify those templates itself as things change in the code. Therefore, if WebGUI does modify those templates, the users that edited the templates will often lose their edits.

We haven't changed this though because we do want users to be able to edit the templates in case they find a bug in one, and our own developers and designers edit the templates for upcoming releases. Therefore we just weren't sure how to fix this problem.

Starting with WebGUI 7.6 we've finally figured out a way to keep them editable, but also warn the user that they shouldn't edit default templates. (See the attached screenshot.) The user will now be prompted with a big warning that the templates should not be edited, and they'll be given an option to make a copy of the template for their own use.

Please join us on the next RFE Day on October 21, and help us make WebGUI the best it can be.

 Sounds like a great idea.

I know that often I'll edit a default template if I want to quickly try a change to a template that I haven't bothered to customize yet.

For example, I start using Data Form and I decide to tweak something in the List Template. Often I'll edit the default template first, because I'm just experimenting and I can't be bothered going into the asset manager to create a copy of the default template, switching over to it and then editing it. The problem is of course that sometimes after I've finished experimenting I forget to move my changes into a new template..

Perhaps it would be useful to have some sort of "Save As" button when editing a template (so that you could edit the default and save it as a new one when you're finished), or a "New based on.. " option in the template chooser that would create a new template based on the default and select it, all in one go. Just thinking out loud..

Mr. I'm-too-lazy-to-copy-a-template (aka Patrick).

We didn't do the other thing you mention, the asset the user came from still uses the old, default template.

I'm fixing that as we speak.  This is now added to 7.6.1

(Edit: I should mention, so the black blog doesn't become an RFE board, that I wanted this done before. Patrick just reminded me.)
