I believe that the size of avatars should be limitable. I suggest that avatars are being resized at the time of submittal based on a max size setting similar to that for regular images. Ideally, a warning message would be displayed if resizing occurs.
Alternatively, at least a max size setting for avatars should be added which is available in CS templates. That way one can limit the size by adding CSS max-width and max-height styles. The clear disadvantage of this approach is, however, that large images still need to be loaded.
Yes, I agree in principle. Our most important problem with not having the images reseized is that on some sites these images take up enormous amounts of disk space.
If the are reseized I would prefer to be able to have them reseized to a certain width and not to a max width or height. It's the width that is most often the determinant in a design. If the landscape versions are quite small, the portrait versions become too small. Often using the complete available width in a design with both landscape and portrait photo's is the best-looking.
I'm also curious as to what the prefered way to implement this would be. For myself I was thinking about an activity. But I imagine that for many other puposes it's better to have it done immediately.
