Hi. After working on a really complex layout for a site, I have a couple suggestions that I think would make these default layout a little more friendly,. 1) always have a right column. - this column distinquishes itself from the "main" layout. But allows customer to optionally add stuff to the side. If there isn't any content there, it doesn't display anything. Perhaps even distinquish the far right column with a different color drag box. 2a) Always provide a top and bottom position. These are often used for banners type content. If they want to use the top or the bottom position - they are there as bonuses reguardless of "main" portion of the layout 2b) So, "one over two","two over one", and "side by side" and "news" can be combined into a "two column" which would be "one over two over one". I think the main point of these is to have the "side by side" layout. 3) similarly, provide a "three column" which is really a "one over three over one" Of course the new "one over two over one" and "one over three over one" would also have a "right column" (see suggestion #1) Thanks! |

What you are suggesting is adding "optional" layout positions; there are a couple of problems with that. A. Unused positions will add empty divs to the page. This can cause all kinds of styling problems. Theoretically this can be be prevented in the template, but the templates will become overly complex. B. The current template code of the page layout templates is already quite complex. If a designer wants to customize a layout template, it's already difficult to start with a 2 column layout, let alone modifying a one-over-three-over-one template. C. If the a right column sometimes is and sometimes isn't used, it's impossible to make robust default CSS for it. I don't think your suggestion 1 is feasible. If you think that (for example) a "1 over 3 over 1" is a must have (not only for you, but for WebGUI users in general), you may of course RFE for it. If you need help building a complex custom layout, just post the question on the design forum. We want to reduce the total number of templates in the core, so another solution I can think of is adding a "extreme layouts" package to the bazaar, with your suggestion of "one over three over one, with right column" but also some really crazy ones, like "one over five over three over nine". I know that there are plans to change the way page layouts work in WG8 and that will maybe allow for a simple solution for points 2 and 3. But for now it's no to all. Rogier | United Knowledge |
