It's been brought to my attention (with only minor bruising) that the default style templates in WebGUI are rather dated.

So, in an effort to bring WebGUI into the 21st century, I'm looking for a dozen new style templates. Some of them will be taken from the Bazaar (the Underground one has been asked for), but we may not have enough.

Would there be volunteers to take some of the OSWD or Styleshout templates and create styles from them? Alternatively, you can make your own (of course), but that's not necessary if you don't have the time.

Also, there will now be a drop-down select box during the Initial Setup to choose from the 12 included styles, along with a "Preview" button to see how it looks with some default content.

Once we have a pool of a dozen or so, we're going to hold a poll to choose what the real "default" one will be (the one selected at the start).

I'd love to design a style from scratch, but I'm not sure I'll have the time. I can probably make myself useful by doing some quality testing.

Would it be a good idea to make an inventory of what kind of default styles we want? Or rather, what potential WebGUI users might want to see. If there are going to be 12 styles, that should perhaps include:

  • a professional, businesslike style
  • a style suited to a more personal site
  • a minimal, grid based, "swiss" style
  • a super designed flashy style, w/ lots of images etc.
  • a style with a "classy" feel (serif fonts etc)
  • ...

Any more ideas? We can take a look at what's in the bazaar and see what sort of styles are still missing.

One more thing: if we can get to 12 styles that would be great, but I'd rather see (say) 6 awesome styles than 12 that are just ok.

Quality over quantity, right?

I am interested in contributing a style. Is there a deadline?

"Great" is subjective. I'd rather give people more choices.

Let's set the deadline for submissions at May 1. This gives me time to get the proper features into WebGUI that will enable this choice.

OK, my bad; I'll keep it objective. In my opinion, we should come up with some set of measurable criteria first, like:

  • validating xhtml/css
  • cross browser tested in IE6+, safari, chrome, FF, ...?
  • on win and mac systems
  • may it / should it contain a login box?
  • may it / should it contain a search box?
  • how many sublevels should the nav be able to handle?
  • use an image for the logo or just the site name in text?
  • should the default content be designed too, or is that going to be changed soon?

Actually, (again) in my opinion, someone should look at the content first: is the default content up to date? Perhaps some pages can be improved by selecting a multi column layout template.

The "Your next step" page, could probably use some new images. And so could the "Documentation" page because the 900px wide image will cause problems if we want to make a fixed width style with a vertical nav (not a far fetched idea, right?).

Alternatively (to setting up the content first) the content could be optimized afterwards for whatever style is selected as the "default default" (but still work OK with others).

In summary, the process should look something like this:

  1. copywriting
  2. setting up a new default site
  3. make a list of requirements
  4. build / gather styles
  5. testing and QA
  6. deciding on a default
  7. make WebGUI the most popular CMS ever

If Plain Black is serious about improving the look of WebGUI, I think this is the way to go. I only have WebGUIs best interests in mind, and I really think that we need a "measure first" approach to guarantee quality and success. And I'll gladly help with any part of the process.

Kristi and Tavis are working on new default content, but the default content gets deleted by everyone. It should look good in the style, but the style needs to handle more than just the default content: It needs to handle a real site.

  • validating xhtml/css -- Yes. 100%
  • cross browser tested in IE6+, Safari, FF, Chrome, Opera on windows and mac systems
  • Must contain a login box
  • May contain a search box. We'll add a Search page to the default content
  • Nav should be best practices: 2 sublevels (any more and performance starts to suffer)
  • Logos should be avoided, since it would require the user to edit the image
  • The default content copy will be written by Kristi. Once that's done and it's committed, I'll take any suggestions and allow prettification, but it has to work across a myriad of style templates, which will limit what can be done.

I agree that we should probably get rid of those ancient images and that ancient flash banner (which just looks more tacky than impressive). I'll let Kristi know.

As always I'm open to suggestions, that's why I asked you guys before I began this project in earnest. There's still some minor backend work before any of this can actually work, so there's time for discussion.

Sounds good! Looking forward to see the style picker feature, and the new content too.

One more thought: should we add the use of FilePump as a requirement? Or perhaps for any styles that uses more than one file? It's such a great feature, but the couple of bugs I found in it recently made me doubt if it's being used at all.

We've been using it in production for about a year. I think Rory might be actively using it too? No idea if anyone else is though.

It would be a good question for the next webgui.org poll: "Are you using FilePump?"
