The latest WebGUI blog entry asked for those interested in helping out with beta testing to post a message on this message board. I guess I'm the first!

I'm not yet up to speed with Git, so I can't contribute fixes back directly, but that hasn't prevented me from filing a few bug fixes in the past. Hopefully I can still be useful for now in this capacity. (I hope to start using Git eventually, but not until 2012 at this point.)

Is there any chance of the WG8 devs organizing some sort of webinar to introduce people like me who have not been involved in the alpha development to get familiar with what's new and different? I think this could be really valuable. I'd be willing to set aside a half or whole day for this sort of thing.

A few topics I'd be interested in:

  • migrating to the new WRE, especially adapting Apache configs to PSGI/Plack
  • Moose
  • Admin console mod/plugin development
  • InnoDB - important differences from MyISAM and whether they require updates to API, macros, etc.
  • WebGUI coding standards review/overview

I'll check with the powers that be about setting up something like this.  At the very least we could coordinate a time in IRC where everyone could get together.

However, for me to finagle time away from active projects to run this, I need to be able to show that lots of people are interested.

So, anyone on the dev list wants what Trex is talking about, intro to WebGUI 8, learn about Moose, WRE changes, InnoDB changes, Plack changes, API changes and so on, please add a comment to this thread and we'll see where it goes.

In the meantime, there are resources that people can access now.

  1. There are files in the git repository, WebGUI 8 branch that show how to set up a dev site in WebGUI 8 without using the WRE (README) and API changes (docs/migration.txt)
  2. Anyone who went to WUC 2010 had the chance to see presentations form Doug, Patrick and me about WebGUI 8 topics.
  3. Doug made a series of blog postings over at http://blogs.perl.org/users/preaction/

Due to the long development time for 8, it feels like WebGUI has kind of gone to sleep or gone away.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I will help testing. I agree to Trex' suggestions.

I'm glad to hear interest from other folks! The number of replies on this thread have reached the requisite "lots of people" limit, but if not, I'd like to suggest that you shouldn't discount the value of recording the webinars (or Skype sessions or IRC chats) as resources for those who miss the original session and/or decide to get involved WebGUI 8 later on.

The other topics for discussion that people have proposed are definitely welcome -- I was just throwing out initial ideas of my own. It wouldn't all have to take place on one day either, if some topics are ready to be presented earlier than others.

JT's keynote for 2010 at http://www.webgui.org/wgtv talks about what's new and different from a user standpoint.  My Pittsburgh Perl Workshop talk introduced wG8 dev for programmers.  I'm hoping to give the talk again for Phoenix Perl Mongers, who videotapes talks, and then I'll see about getting it up on WebGUI TV.

If you want help with git (the process is:  create a branch, commit changes, push those up to github, send a pull request), myself and perhaps others on IRC would be glad to assist.  git makes it easy to integrate even small patches, but if you do a significant, interesting change or fix, I wouldn't refuse a unified diff by email.

Cool! I'm glad to see some activity around wG8 starting to bubble up to the discussion forum. It does seem like WebGUI has gone into a bit of a hiatus and am glad to hear that's not the case.

We're interested in beta testing.  I like Trex's suggestion though would request starting with a how to install & setup wg8 before delving into the other topics. I'd also like to know what the process will be like to migrate custom code from wg7.

How about scheduling some dev meetings on the IRC channel to get things kicked off? A screen-sharing session would be ideal so we can watch you do a new installation. Skype perhaps?

Speaking personally, I'd encourage everyone to try to make it to the 2012 YAPC in Madison, Wisconson.  That's a ways off still, but it's not too early to start thinking about it.  Most talks aren't nearly as technical as most people fear.

That's not to say that screen shares and organized chats can't be done, of course.

Yes! I'm very interested. And we're definitely thinking about going to the YAPC.

I would be happy to test it out. Please note that I am not a programmer but happy to help where I can.
