Hello. I'm fairly new here and I hope this is the right forum for this question. I plan on learning and using WebGUI for building a new website. I have been looking into Web Hosting. And I have a question on the server type. I've read that the only big difference between server types is the kind of software you are using to edit your Web Page. That some are better for others.

So far I've looked at a couple of the larger Web Host that are normally number 1 or 2 on the top ten rated Web Hosting sites. And then a Linux Hosting site. I can't find anywhere on the first two sites about Linux or no Linux. I'm still attempting to contact them about this.

http://www.hostmonster.com - Linux

http://www.startlogic.com/startlogic/index.bml - ???

http://www.webhost4life.com/linux199.asp - Linux

So if I'm going to use WebGUI should I find a Linux Hosting server? Is this a big deal or no? I'm also using Linux on the PC I plan on using WebGUI on for editing the site.

Edit: I found out Hostmonster is all Linux

WebGUI is running under Linux and Windows. But you will need a dedicated server. You will not be able to install all you need in an average shared hosting environment. Another possibility is to go to a specialized WebGUI hoster.

Could someone explain this further. Your saying that a normal hosting service isn't going to be fully compatable with WebGUI? Why is that? Your also saying I basically need a server at my work/house etc. Or the specialized Hoster.

Furthermore, the platform on which your PC runs shouldn't make any difference, since all changes on the website are made via a webbrowser.
Only for extra plugins (macro's, translations etc) it can make a (small) difference in the subject of connecting to your webserver. Difference, not a problem, with existing features like putty and probably something similar for connecting from a linux pc to a windows server.

Just supporting what klaus said in his posting.  If you just want a website with WebGUI, the easiest way is to go with a WebGUI hoster.

Plain Black, which makes WebGUI, is also a hoster.

I would not recommend installing WebGUI yourself onto a shared or dedicated webserver if you have no skills in maintaining a unix system.

Not even if you are going to use it only for a hobby project.

Maybe I'm a little confused. Someone said I needed a dedicated Server. But Plain Black only offers them as a seperate package.

"For sites with higher traffic or those that demand exclusivity, out dedicated servers offer the best mix of price performance and peace of mind. Servers start at 100$ setup and 300$ monthly."

Do their normal packages not run WebGUI to it's full capacity?

Sorry for asking all these questions. Just trying to figure out what the limits are for normal shared hosting when it comes to using WebGUI.

Let's see if I can clear things up for you Tod. Here are your hosting options and when to choose them.

$5/mo Generic Host

You cannot use a cheap generic web hoster. WebGUI is a big application, so it won't work on a generic ultra cheap hoster.

WebGUI Shared Hosting

There are many providers out there that provide specialized WebGUI shared hosting accounts. What this means is that the hoster will set up a server that is dedicated to running WebGUI, and put between 10 and 100 WebGUI sites on it (hence the "shared" name). Plain Black offers two of these services $20/mo without support and $50/mo with support. You'd use this kind of package for pretty much all normal sites and purposes.

Virtual Server Hosting

You can install WebGUI on a virtual server. A virtual server is one physical hardware device that is split into pieces using some special software (like VMWare or Virtuozzo) to make it look like it is between 2 and 8 machines. Then you're buying one of those virtual servers.  Plain Black has several of these plans available where we install WebGUI for you and upgrade it for you, or you can go find your own virtual server provider and do all the work yourself. You'd use this if you need a little more storage space or bandwidth, or if you want to write your own custom WebGUI plugins and use those on your server.

Dedicated Server Hosting

You can install WebGUI on a dedicated server. This means the entire machine is dedicated to the purpose of running WebGUI. Plain Black has several of these options starting at $300 per month. You'd use a dedicated server if you have a lot of traffic coming to your site or you have a lot of sites to run, so you need all the resources of the hardware at your disposal. You would choose Plain Black to purchase the servers if you want support, server administration, monitoring, backups, installation, and upgrades all handled by Plain Black's staff. If you want to do it all yourself, then you go to any third party provider that sells dedicated servers.

If you have any questions about Plain Black hosting options, feel free to email sales@plainblack.com.

Let's see if I can add to your confusion...  Laughing

Because of the large number of additional components that WebGUI requires that are typically not included in a "standard" web hosting package with a run-of-the-mill hosting service, those hosting services won't work for you.

You CAN get shared hosting with WebGUI, but will need to work with Plain Black or another company specializing in WebGUI hosting in order to get a server with those additional components installed.

As long as your hosting company has a server dedicated to WebGUI, you won't need your own server.

Does that help at all?

Jarrod

Yes that helps alot.

My last question would be what are these "additional components" that WebGUI requires. Understanding what they are so I can see for myself what companies offer what would help a huge amount. I noticed the larger Web Hosting Services offer alot of features.
