I am exploring the possibility of using WebGui for project management....delivering services to customers. Typically we would initiate a project and a team would work towards the goal. Part of the requirement would be to upload "supporting documents" to the project folder. Also, we would want to define workflows to communicate status and hand offs. Playing with WebGui for a couple days and I am not clear if this is a good fit ....??? Is it? Comments ...feedback? thanks --- (Edited on 2/24/2010 11:47 pm [GMT-0600] by bsme) --- |

I think it will be a good fit, but it might require some custom coding for links or workflows. It depends on how far your requirements are off from what you want to do. At the moment it is hard to tell how snug the fit will be. If you're just getting used to WebGUI's front end, maybe you can try one of Tavis Parker's webinars: https://www.plainblack.com/webinar But there is a good base for workflows and document management. If you're gonna use WebGUI and have to make new stuff, first look in the bazaar/marketplace. Maybe it contains what you're looking for. If that is not the case, there's need for new code (I expect that every system you're gonna take will need some customization). If you feel comfortable code it yourself, otherwise, outsource it to companies like plainblack/knowmad/oqapi/perldreamer (I'd like to offer ProcoliX as well, but we're a hosting company and programming isn't our main activity). --- (Edited on 25-February-2010 11:11 [GMT+0100] by bartjol) --- |

I guess part of my concern is that it appears that the workflow application is associated with "versioning" or "user" activity.... can you comment on that ...am I missing something? Also, if I was to try to build a project management site what specific "modules" would I need to use or look at?

A lot of default workflows are with respect to versions or users, but, they don't have to be, and have an object type: None. These categories are more a directory structure to keep the overview. Considering your question: 'Also, if I was to try to build a project management site what specific "modules" would I need to use or look at?' This question is a bit too general. For the modules: you have the default project manager in 7.7 and 7.8, so you can check that out. It depends a lot on what functionality you require. I suppose you are aware of the demo sites, where you can test this. In the help index, the template variables are shown, there you can see all values that are available to show in overviews. Of course there are other assets, which also might be of help. For the possibility of programming you can look at the API. To give a better indication whether WebGUI can satisfy your needs, a further specified plan is necessary. Of course we like to help you to get familiar with WebGUI, but we need more information from you. And it can be that some people here decide that you ask too much of them this way. --- (Edited on 25-February-2010 14:57 [GMT+0100] by bartjol) --- |
