Recommendation for web chat system?

I would like to include a web chat on my site. Ideally, the server would run on Apache/Perl or be a light-weight stand-alone application. Apache/PHP would be fine in principle, but the PHP module does not seem to be included in the standard WRE. The client should avoid Java. Can anyone recommend a system that combines well with WebGUI and WRE?
