Hello all,

I am investigating the steps required to migrate several WebGUI v6 sites to v7, and I am confused by the process.  Pardon me if this is a simple question, but I am new to the world of LAMP.

My plan was to create a site on the new server with the same same, and then insert the old database into the new.  But then I wondered about changes to the database structure.

Any help - even a rough outline of the steps -would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Yeah, there are db changes, which you can find in the upgrade scripts. So importing the old dbin a new WebGUI will break stuff.

In between there are "stop versions" which can be found for the 7-series at http://www.webgui.org/wiki/stop-versions. For the 6.x versions they should be in the gotcha file

Another thing is that there are some perl changes, so run testEnvironment at least a couple of times during the proces

If you can, make an export of the db and do the upgrade on a test WebGUI installation. Read especially all the gotchas and changelogs, so you know what to expect.

Thank you for the reply, bartjol!

I am afraid I wasn't as clear as I should have been.

Currently, I have two working WebGui servers - one in v6 and the other in v7.  I want to move sites from the old to the new servers.  So...i am confused about where I would run the upgrade scripts.  The old server must remain functional, and I was hoping to avoid fussing with an upgrade on it.

Instead, I was hoping to use the backups from the old server and import them - somehow - into the new server.  Is this possible?

I hope that I am clearer now.

Thank you for any advice you have!

You can use the backups, but if you want both servers to remain functional, you should do an off site upgrade ( for instance on your desktop/laptop). After performing the upgrade you can import the upgraded site into your 7 server. It is not really an option just to import the db on your 7 server and try to run upgrade.

Aaaah.

So, the best (only?) way to migrate these sites is to build a WebGUI 6 environment on the new server, restore the sites to the new server, and then step through the upgrades on that server.  This way, the old server is still functional.

Correct me if I didn't that right.  Thank you for your help.
