A week ago, at YAPC::NA, I kicked off a Kickstarter to finish wG8.  The Perl community has been supportive, and some well known personalities have gotten on board.

I posted in the "is WebGUI dead" thread with some rationale and goals:

http://www.webgui.org/etcetera/is-webgui-dead-

Here's the Kickstarter.  The wording is aimed at the broader Perl community, but the goals are very much to finish wG8 up and try to get it established as a community powered project.

So far, I'm really impressed with the response, and I've just started to reach out to the wG community.  I think with personal contributions (thank you everyone!) and one or two companies behind this, I might actually be able to make this happen!  I'm also very grateful for all of the encouragement and support I've gotten.

Some customers are still waiting for completion for about two years.

Looking at the "views" on "is webgui dead", it's still a living issue.
But please don't go the same way as WebGUI did, changing from 5.x to 7.x.
Then the hardcore base again has to be build-up from scratch.

haarg and I hammered out a plan for a 7.x compat layer that would work most of the time.  I agree that's important.

Please support the developers to complete 8th version of this fantastic software, it is the only real CMS I ever seen (I've tried about 20 CMSs including different nuke toys, WordPress, jumlas/mambos and other PHP crap, even forever buggy typo3, some commercial JVM based monsters with my lovely hibernate data link)  and there is no even the most expensive one which could provide the same WebGUI flexibility, ease of use and power at the same time. And still WebGUI is free GPL!

Dont be fooled by nice looking shiny PHP toys, look into the core and a feature set. WebGUI is unique diamond of a human thought.

You can take any beautiful template from monster templates site to make WebGUI looking like a miss CMS of the universe if needed.

What I would like to see in WG later:

Database independant Perl ORM layer like hibernate and PostgreSQL support tested

Support for different programming languages tested, at least JavaScript on server side, and mono would be great to do plugins and macro. It is possible via RPC, e.g. XML-RPC, but would be more convenient if it would be directly supported.

Affordable $24/Year WebGUI hosting

Thanks to an unexpected contributed from Plain Black themselves, and thousands raised from the Perl community and WebGUI community, I'm pleased to report that this project has been funded.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped spread the word.

I've moved my GitHub fork of http://github.com/plainblack/webgui over to http://github.com/alliumcepa/webgui and am giving commit bits to people who want to help.  Pull requests work too.  I'm hoping that work done there will eventually feed back in to Plain Black's repo.  I plan to work with Colin, JT, and other interested parties on that and address remaining code quality and style questions at that point.  Or the plan might change in response to feedback.

Thanks again!
