negative rating on posts

Now that I'm using the discussion boards more than I used to, I'm noticing some things that I find odd.

When I post a reply it has a rating of 0. But then soon after this post gets rated -2.

There are even entire threads that have a negative rating. This one for example has a total rating of -8. 

What does that mean and why is it negative?

A long time ago I think we found out that the ratings are being hit by robots.

I had planned on changing them into <form method="post">, something that robots would not follow, but I have yet to get around to modifying the templates.

Presumably bots all hit the site as visitor, can we make ratings only available to Registered Users? Otherwise how many times can 'visitor' users rate things?
