I just stumbled upon this question: if there is artwork included in a GNU lincensed software package, is it free then as well? Or do I have to contact authors and seek for permission?

I am asking because I have stolen some icons from the German localization of php BB in order to compile a German icon set for the WebGUI php BB template. Now I would like to make it available in the Bazaar. However, I do not want to run into troubles (neither steal the property of someone else).

Interesting question that you'd probably need a lawyer to answer. However, in lieu of hiring a professional lawyer, you could just ask the developers to see what their interpretation of the license is and whether they'd allow you to reuse their artwork in another GNU-licensed project.
