Hi. I'm considering WebGUI as my CMS, but I have some basic questions about it. If you could please answer them, that would be greatly appreciated.

1. Is it possible to configure WebGUI so that the black login bar does not exist or is only visible on certain pages? My site intends to have visitors browsing for information, and I'd like to move that out of the way.

2. When setting up WebGUI, will I have to do complex configuration from the admin panel? I know there's a lot to do, but do I have to be experienced, or can I do it with little knowledge of WebGUI?

3. The documentation says the WebGUI will need a blank server to itself. However, I only have one server currently with my hosting company. Is it possible to just host the website on a subdomain, in case I need to use other server space or do I have to have a complete blank server?

4. Can I upload a template that looks completely different from WebGUI?

Thanks for your answers.

The login bar is provided through a macro which again is embedded in the page template. Since you can choose a different page template for each page/asset, it is up to you whether to show the login bar on a certain page or not.

2. When setting up WebGUI, will I have to do complex configuration from the admin panel? I know there's a lot to do, but do I have to be experienced, or can I do it with little knowledge of WebGUI?

WebGUI is very easy to use once you got it installed. In addition, there are a number of guides that can be bought from plainblack. Customization can be tricky sometimes in the beginning. However, there are lots of helpful people around.

3. The documentation says the WebGUI will need a blank server to itself. However, I only have one server currently with my hosting company. Is it possible to just host the website on a subdomain, in case I need to use other server space or do I have to have a complete blank server?

The easiest way to run WebGUI is to rent a hosted installation. Depending on the provider this available starting somewhere from $20 per month.

Alternatively, you can install WebGUI yourself. For this, you need Apache with mod_proxy and mod_perl in addition to MySQL as the database backend. WebGUI further has a number of dependencies on CPAN modules, ImageMagick and so on. In most cases this means that you will need your own root server.

Sounds complicated. However, there is a simple solution. You can use the WegGUI runtime environment (WRE) which provides everything you need and makes running WebGUI a true pleasure. The drawback is that this definitely requires a root server. A virtual server is usually sufficient. Again, there are hosted solutions available.

4. Can I upload a template that looks completely different from WebGUI?

Definitely yes! You can give WebGUI any appearance within the limits of HTML, CSS and JS. Check our website for example.

I prefer to use a seperate login page. Create a new page for example login.html and add the login and admin macros. Now you can remove the login macro from the page style.

Or you create different page styles, some with login and some without. Now you can give each page or pagetree the page style you want to.

2. When setting up WebGUI, will I have to do complex configuration from the admin panel? I know there's a lot to do, but do I have to be experienced, or can I do it with little knowledge of WebGUI?

When managing a server you definitely should have more than a litte experience for a lot of reasons.

But everyone has to start without experience. Install WebGUI - ask your questions here.

3. The documentation says the WebGUI will need a blank server to itself. However, I only have one server currently with my hosting company. Is it possible to just host the website on a subdomain, in case I need to use other server space or do I have to have a complete blank server?

A blank server and running WebGUI with the WRE is recommended. You can do a source install on an existing server. Have a look at the wiki.

4. Can I upload a template that looks completely different from WebGUI?

If you can find one Cool

You can use the Site Starter before your first login and load up a logo and set up the colorscheme. Try it at the WebGUI demo server.

The better way is to create your own styles - and then share them with us. Have a look at the Add Ons section.

I'm confused by your answers to question 3. Let me rephrase it: Can I install and run WebGUI on my server, in it's own empty directory, while the rest of the server is in use for another purpose? A simple answer (yes or no) would be preferred.

Yes.

Follow the instructions in docs/install.txt and the documentation to source install in the WebGUI wiki:

http://www.plainblack.com/community-wiki/source-install
