I am having a hard time with translating certain vocabularies or phrases. Maybe, we can agree on some conventions on how to translate these. For the moment I am talking about the follwing items:

Asset -> Posten, Objekt oder Asset?
Template -> Vorlage oder Template?
Revision -> Revision, Veränderung oder Überarbeitung?
History -> Verlauf, Geschichte oder Historie?
to edit -> editieren oder bearbeiten?
to submit -> einreichen?
Id -> Id oder (eindeutiger) Bezeichner?
label -> Beschriftung?

So what is your oppinion on that?

Hm, this is a bit like talking to myself. Common guys, I cannot believe that there are no Germans hanging around here. The German translation is at 67%. That doesn't happen by itself. If we want to end up with a consistent translation it is important to agree on some conventions. Please, give feedback!

Bummer, my German is really to bad to make such choices. Normally I look for the terms they use in Windows. Most people consider that as a standard and know what to expect if it's the same (in this instance I mainly refer to the choice for "edit").

If I don't know a good translation , I stick to the English (mostly for technical terms, but also stuff like "Thingy"), since in the Netherlands most people feel quite comfortable with English terms. And it's better to have a normal English word, than a word in your native language that doesn't really cover it and sound dorky.

I'm afraid this as much help as I can give you. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Bart,

Thanks for your reply!

You are right. Sticking to terms used in Windows is probably a good idea. I am going to do that whenever it is possible.

If I don't know a good translation , I stick to the English (mostly for technical terms, but also stuff like "Thingy"), since in the Netherlands most people feel quite comfortable with English terms. And it's better to have a normal English word, than a word in your native language that doesn't really cover it and sound dorky.

Which words does that apply to in Dutch? Maybe they are the same in German (except for Thingy). What about the word asset, e.g.?

These words probably should not be translated in German, too.

I have started to compile some notes in the comments section on i18n.webgui.org. Would be nice if others could join in later on. Notes are reproduced in the following.

* Übsersetzer *

Falls ihr an der Übsersetzung mitarbeitet, dann fügt doch bitte eure Namen und idealerweise eine e-Mailadresse hinzu. Auf diese Weise können wir uns Zukunft besser austauschen.

Bernd Kalbfuß-Zimmermann (xxx@yyy.de, bernd auf webgui.org)

* Konventionen *

Es ist die förmliche Anrede zu wählen.

Nomen sind im Deutschen zusammenzuschreiben. Der Begriff "template variables" wird z.B. zu "Schablonenvariablen". Ist ein Wortteil dem Englischen entliehen, werden die beiden Nomen mit einem Bindestrich verbunden (z.B. "Asset-Eigenschaften).

* Übersetzungen *

Um eine einheitliche Übersetzung zu gewährleisten, ist im Folgenden eine Überstzungstabelle für schwierige bzw. häufig vorkommende Vokabeln bzw. Phrasen aufgeführt. Bitte fügt weitere Einträge nach belieben hinzu. Solltet ihr mit einer Übersetzung nicht einverstanden sein, dann wäre es nett, ihr würdet vorher eine Diskussion hierzu auf webgui.org initiieren und nicht einfach eine Änderung vornehmen.

(to) edit -> bearbeiten
editing -> Bearbeitung
history -> Verlauf
label -> Beschriftung
(to) submit -> einreichen
revision -> Revision
template -> Schablone

Die folgenden Worte sollten aus dem Englischen übernommen werden, da keine angemessene deutsche Übersetzung existiert. Die Groß-/Kleinschreibung ist natürlich anzupassen.

asset
cache
Id
layout
proxy

I think other examples are Workflow, Id and URL.

What about "Rich Editor"? I have translated with "Multimedia Editor" so far, which is certainly sub-optimal.

Just asking, did you contact the guys from http://www.webgui-cms.de/ ? And what do they say about helping with the translation when you have?

I tried but I wasn't even able to register. It seems that anonymous registration has been disabled. I contacted Andreas Graf twice via email (info@webgui-cms.de), but have not received any reply yet. Klaus Hertel could not help me either. Does anyone know more?

Finally, I have received a reply from Andreas Graf today. He was so kind to re-activate registration so that I could create an account. I am going to talk to other translators (if there are any) and report details here.
