Ever since seeing this message from Adam Kennedy on the Padre mailing list about Log::Log4perl I've been meaning to do my own "unscientific measurement" of how much memory it adds to our modperl footprint. Apparently it's about 2Mb. Is that worth it? Are people using enough of Log4perl's special features to justify it? Or should we consider rolling our own light-weight logging system for WebGUI 8? Or perhaps replacing Log4perl with a smaller CPAN module. Patrick |

Unfortunately I have no time left in the R&D team's time budget to add anything new to WebGUI 8. However, if you'd like to take on this project for WebGUI 8 then I'd certainly be open to seeing what you can do to reduce the memory footprint. Rolling our own doesn't seem like a good idea, but there certainly could be something on CPAN that could help us out. My only concern is that once we do this I won't be able to use my favorite Log4perl plugin anymore: http://github.com/pdonelan/log4perl-filter-callermatch |
