SQLEdit

What's SQLEdit? (Current version: 06.03.03/2005-01-25)

SQLEdit is a W(eb)object for WebGUI  one of the most popular open source content management systems (CMS).

Currently supports WebGUI release 5.5, 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2 under Linux and Windows. SQLEdit fully supported MySQL database.

Hot news: Starting from 06.03.01, SQLEdit supports Microsoft® SQL Server database. This support is currently in beta and may be some bugs or unsupported features. As an example, binary data via upload, shouldn't work.

Microsoft® SQL Server support has been tested with these DBD drivers:

  • DBD:Sybase via freeTDS under Linux
    Example DSN:
        dbi:Sybase:server=your_server;database=your_db
    with these entries in freetds.conf
        [your_server]
        host = your_server
        port = 1433
        tds version = 8.0

  • DBD:ODBC using system DSN under Windows
    Example DSN:
        dbi:ODBC:DSN=sqledit

  • DBD:ADO using standard autentication
    Example DSN:
       dbi:ADO:Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=sqledit;

All these tests have been made with Microsoft® SQL Server 2000 under Windows 2000.

This module allows to build a web form to add, to edit and to delete data from database tables using the WebGUI philosophy to generate it.

This module allows to build a web form to add , to edit and to delete data from database tables using the WebGUI philosophy to generate it.

By giving the database link property (DSN,username and password) and a table name, this module builds a web form with all table columns by trying to set the best field type. As an example, if a column is of type "date", a field with a calendar button and javascript to validate date input in this field, will be placed on form, if a column is an auto_incremental column, i.e. automatically its numerical value increases when new records is added, a visible and not writable field will be placed on web form.

However, properties of web fields can be changed by content manager so, e.g., you can change a text field into a select list field to force users to enter data selecting it from some possible values.

You can also use macros to set possible values and default value for fields. To set possible values is important that result macro returns values in format "key => value\n" or "key\n".

For every field it is moreover possible to set up several check or restriction for the possible values assignable by users. It's possible, as an example, to assign the minimal and/or maximum number of characters, the range of valid characters, the range of valid values. All this with an easy configuration page.

Layout of web form generated by this module is personalized because it uses templates, following WebGUI philosophy.

Key features.

With SQLEdit Wobject you can

  • Easy create database web forms.
  • Insert, edit and delete records from a database table.
  • Modify and delete records from one-to-one or one-to-many related tables with foreing keys. Yes, you can manage master-detail tables
  • Upload files into BLOB fields
  • Personalized layout of every columns table, setting visibility and HTML Form field module type.
  • Check and restriction for possible values of fields assignable by users
  • Notification, via e-mail, of changes in the database records.

How to install.

Take a look at  docs/SQLEdit/install.txt file for detailed installation instructions.

ChangeLog

Version 06.03.03 (2005-01-25)
=============================
- With Microsoft SQL Server you will see and use only tables owned by the user you connect. Changes SQL statements to obtain all tables and replace SQL for columns info with sp_MSHelp* store procedures that are more readable and should be more performance.
- For Microsoft SQL Server we store now owner.tablename as tablename. To avoid missing characters, the relative field lenght has be changed.
- If you try to delete records in a table with string pks, you got an error.
- If you try to delete records in a table with string pks, you come back to a new form with primary keys filled with old values. Fixed so the new form is  totally empty.

Version 06.03.02 (2005-01-24)
=============================
- In previous version the MSSQL support works only if your database is named sqledit owing to some lines of testing code I left in mssql.pm.
- No changes has been made in SQLEdit.pm apart from the versione number.

Version 06.03.01 (2005-01-24)
=============================
- Alter SQLEdit database because databaseLinkId must be a varchar in WebGUI 6.2
- The databaseLink selection doesn't work because databaseLinkId is a varchar in WebGUI 6.2 and because default database link selection is now binded to default WebGUI database and not to the unset value.
- Internally changed the variable name which handle database connection to avoid conflict with WebGUI variables namespace.
- In the versions of WebGUI previous to the 06.00.00 if yours form has datetime fields and it produced an error owing to checks in the value of the fields, the datetime fields reset to value "01-01-1970". Fixed
- Add a property of the WObject to inform SQLEdit what kind of database it will be used. Default database type will be, obviously, MySQL.
- Add Cc and Bcc fields for email notify.
- To, From, Cc and Bcc now processes macros.

Version 06.03.00 (2005-01-16)
=============================
- Optimize access to user database handler.
- All database logics has been moved out from SQLEdit into DBIx::DBDescribe module.

You can find here the complete changelog file.

This project is also hosted on sourceforge, so you can use its bug tracking system and its support and feature request system.

You can find latest stable (06.02.05) here. There is a beta branch now (06.03.xx) to include support for other database (Microsoft SQL Server, Postgresql,..).

I just installed SQLEdit and am working through the example in the website (name, birthdate, sex).  I entered a couple of recs while Admin mode was enabled, then disabled it and entered another record.  Then trying to view/edit the data, I get some errors:

This is an error that occurs when I click the 'Edit' link on items in the SQLReport page that have single-digit months in them.  (The dates are formatted as mm-dd-yyyy, which is what the calender emits.)

Turning on debugging for either of these wobjects doesn't yield any useful info.

SQLEdit (like SQLReport), owing to its complexity, requires an UI Level 9 (guru), otherwise it's not visible in 'Add content' list.

4ebruni: "
As soon as possible (maybe this weekend) I try to implement this feature in SQLEdit.
"
4ebruni: "
Starting from 06.00.01 you can use macros to set possible values and default value for fields.

To set possible values is important that result macro returns values in format "key => value\n" or "key\n".

As an example you can configure a field like this (using some programmer macros)

and having, as result, something like this:

Owing to macro in "default value", the default selection will depend from your login name.

The newline before the end of SQL macro. It's very important because, with it, the result of the macro will be

1 => Visitor ¶
3 => Admin

However you can't use these new features to solve your problem if the "lookup" table is external to WebGUI database, because, SQL macro execute query inside WebGUI database. This is, of course, an SQL macro limit, and not an SQLEdit one.

As soon as possible, I'll try to release an SQL-like macro to query an external database.

Hoping this can help you.

Great wobject!

I can't seem to get user macros to expand when used as possible values, or when entered directly into fields.  Is this expected behavior?

It would be great if SQLEdit would expand macros, so date stamps, usernames, and demographics could auto-populate the form.

Hi,

I am using version 6.0.0.2 of SQLEdit and WebGUI 5.5.6;  I tried to follow the examples on Bruni's web site. When using the links to edit or delete records I get to a blank new record in SQLEdit instead of the one selected. The webgui log shows the error:

"attempted to call a non-existent operation: edit. Root cause: Bareword "WebGUI::Operation::www_edit" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 2177) line 1."

As in the changelog it was mentioned this issue has been fixed in 6.0.0.2, I was wondering if anyone else experienced it.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

Unlike the Dataform wobject, SQLEdit displays the "possible values" for a checkbox or radio list in alphabetical order and one line, instead of the order the are entered into the Possible Values field with line breaks between each value.

I assume this is because a different method is used to parse the values, possibly because keys can be specified.

I've looked at the code, but, alas, am no guru.  Any thoughts on how to get SQLEdit to display the possible values as entered, and with line breaks?  Thanks.

4Armaghan Saqib: "
Hi,

SQLEdit is a really powerful wobject. I was able to create very powerful forms including table driven select boxes.

How can I implement basic master-detail functionality? For example, if I want to enter detail lines of a given order, I can do so without entering the order number etc.

I normally do this type of work in PHP and then call it from webgui. If I can do this in SQLEdit, I shall be able to get rid of PHP completely.

Thanks in advance and regards

4Armaghan Saqib: "
Hi,

Is it possible that I can use URL parameter as default for a column. For example, if order detail page contains a form to enter order details then from the URL below:

http://www.mydomain.com/order_detail?orderid=10

can we get orderid value (10) as default in this form using some macro?

This will help simulate master-detail functionality in some way.

Thanks in advance and regards

4ebruni: "
In fact, this problem has been fixed in 6.0.2 but the documentation on my web site wasn't up to date and was related to 6.0.1.

The problem is in the report template field string
<td><a href="test_edit?op=edit&id=&#94;0;">Edit</td>
<td><a href="test_edit?op=delete&id=&#94;0;">Delete</td>

The right string is:
<td><a href="test_edit?exec=edit&id=&#94;0;">Edit</td>
<td><a href="test_edit?exec=delete&id=&#94;0;">Delete</td>

I update documentation on my website now.
"
4ebruni: "
Of course you must change the query string parameter to correct calling SQLEdit edit/delete mode changing "op" parameter into "exec" parameter i.e., if you have a link like this,

<a href="test_edit?op=edit&id=&#94;0;">Edit</td>

you must change it as
<a href="test_edit?exec=edit&id=&#94;0;">Edit</td>

You can do this starting from SQLEdit ver. 06.00.03.

Hi all,

There are some problems with this version. I have tried either to upgrade from 06.00.02 or to uninstall 06.00.02 and install from fresh 06.00.03. What happens is that (following the sample on EBruni's web site) when you add an SQLEdit wobject and try to save it, I get the following error in the WEBGUI error log:

I should say that on the same system 06.00.02 works just fine.

Convert 06.00.12 to work with WebGUI is not so difficult but don't break forward compatibility it is not so simple.

4bottelberghs: "First of all, my compliments for your work. This is definitely a very useful tool for site administrators, and I know it will save me a lot of work.

I have a question about the template variables that are provided. The form is now generated with some kind of loop, whether you choose to use the tmpl_loop or form.fields.template. But is it also possible to retrieve these fields and values directly. eg.

For database table column lastname:

etc.

This would provide more possibilities for the layout of the form.
Another problem I encountered was that I have a form in which a date must be displayed, but not editable. If I set it to display the epoch time is displayed, which isn't very usefull. If I have access to this field directly, I could use the Date macro to solve this problem. Of course, there are other solutions.

I hope you can help me with this in some way. Keep up the good work!

You have three possibilities to solve your problem.

Starting from 06.00.10 you can use events to set it manually. If your
field name is "mydtfield" you can add this code in the onBeforeEdit event
(owing to a typo untill 06.01.01, in the first row you must set fdl_values)

my $fv = $_[0]->{fld_values};
$fv->{mydtfield} = WebGUI::DateTime::epochToHuman($fv->{mydtfield},'%z %Z');

Starting from 06.00.12 you can use field.value template variable.
Create an SQLEdit_field template and set your dataTime field with this template

<tr class="tableData">
  <td>
   <TMPL_VAR name="field.adminTools">
   <b><TMPL_VAR NAME="field.label">:</b>
  </td>
  <td>
   ?D("%z %Z",<TMPL_VAR NAME="field.value">);
  </td>
 </tr>

(replace ?D with CTRL-D macro, I was not able to enter it without avoid this forum to process this macro)

Here you can find more details."

I had a problem with the redirect to the referer page. I'm
running WebGUI 6.2.11 with lighttp (fastcgi) under Linux and Windows
with Cygwin. The redirection to the refererpage never worked. First i
used SQLEdit 6.02.05 then i tried my luck with 6.03.03, but same
result. After a look at the code of SQLEdit i discovered the fault (for
WebGUI 6.2.11) in the _processProceed sub. Here the refererpage is put
at a Session variable which WebGUI never used. After looking at other
wobjects i find a solution, here are my changes to _processProceed:

#$session{header}->{redirect} =  CGI->new->redirect(-uri => $red);

WebGUI::HTTP::setRedirect($red);

A small chang and it works, but i have tested it only for WebGUI 6.2.11, other versions could fail.

Greetings

2ebruni: "I am made bitter to announce that I will not be able to develop the update at least in near future.

I developed this great module in my free time but, although I requested to support my job with a donation, I received nothing.

Now, not having any free time and not having personally

needed of having this new version, I cannot satisfy your

demand.

Obviously I would be very happy to consider this request as a fund-a-feature.

Obviously, If someone decides to develope the upgrade, I will be happy
to add this in the developing tree and give to the author all the
credits.

Bye"

Can you give me an estimate on upgrading to work with 7.0?
